A few minutes after I posted my last blog, Joo read it and pointed out a gross inaccuracy on my part. You see I got engaged since my July 14th blog entry. Erik had asked me if I wanted to go to the beach on a weekend to relax since work was stressing me out so much. Going to the beach is one of our favorite activities. Erik enjoys exploring the tide pools and taking pictures of critters and I just enjoy being at the beach. I cancelled once but made it out to the beach the next weekend. We had to wake up early on a Saturday morning since low tides occur in the morning hours during the summer and that's the only time you can explore tide pools. Erik even printed out the tide schedule. So I woke up 10 minutes before being picked up, brushed my teeth, washed my face, changed my clothes, and off we went. He asked me what I was thinking about and I said, "Work." I was planning out the day and thinking about what I needed to get done for work so that I wouldn't be overwhelmed on Sunday. I did bring a book to read while we were at the beach so that it would keep my mind off of work.

When we arrived at the beach we noticed that there were numerous kelp scattered along the sand and even the water was murky near the shore. Nonetheless we hiked down, determined to enjoy ourselves. There were many people painting outdoors that day with little portable easles. There was a young college aged looking couple who kept stopping to kiss and take pictures. When we got to the sand, we walked through a big rock and found two crabs camouflaged along the rock and Erik took some pictures. Then we walked along the shoreline looking for a good place to sit but didn't find any. So we turned around and walked the other way. We passed by the big rock again but I didn't want to walk through it again since the tide had already risen and I didn't feel like getting wet, but Erik was persistent about going the same way and went in ahead of me. I finally walked in after the tide receded back into the ocean to look at the seashell that Erik said he found and quickly ran out before the next tide came in. It wasn't until later that I found out that he was originally going to proposed inside that big rock. He came out a few seconds later holding a whole shell and said that he found it. As he proceeded to put the shell in his pocket I asked if he thought it was alive since it was whole and closed. He just shrugged and said maybe. Then I suggested that he leave it in its natural environment so that it wouldn't die but he kept it anyway. Since he kept the whole shell anyway I asked him to go back inside the big rock and bring the other half shell that I saw there also. We finally found a place to sit and I took out a book to read. "Are you going to read now?" "Yeah." I read for about twenty minutes while Erik kept himself busy by taking more pictures. I noticed that he was sweating and probably feeling uncomfortable so I stopped reading. So much for enjoying the day at the beach. 'At least he found a shell to take home,' I thought. "Can you help me take pictures of the shell?" I held up the whole shell as he clicked away.

"So is there any engagement customs for Koreans?"
"No, not really. They just eat dinner together with the families."
"No whole roasted pigs?"
"No."
"So are you sure that you love me?"
"Yeah, I'm sure."
"Are you sure that you want to stay with me?"
"Yeah."
"So will you marry me?"
"Yeah, I'll marry you."

He reached out for the seashell and began trying to open it.

"STOP! You're going to kill it!"

He ignored my comment and opened it up rather too easily. And there it was, the engagement ring. I was speechless. It took me a bit to realize that he had really proposed. Then I choked up and teared. I took out the ring and he helped me put it on.
