Lessons Learned

1. After a restless night of getting barely any sleep, I learned that a nursing mother should not eat beans because it causes gas which makes the newborn baby very uncomfortable and cranky.

2. You can offer a clean pinky to the newborn baby to suck on for comfort.

3. You can't give the newborn baby a bath until the semi-clear white scab on the bellybutton peels off. You must apply rubbing alcohol on this area to help speed up the process.

4. New moms are very emotional and cry easily. I guess this continues on from the pregnancy. I wonder when you can finally go back to your normal self.

5. I am tired.

6. Dealing with insurance, particularly HMO, can be very stressful and they do not all agree to a certain procedure which makes it even harder.

7. It's better not to use baby wipes on infants which can cause rashes. Just use fabric-like paper towel and warm water to wipe their tiny butts.

8. When you're a new mom, you are constanly breastfeeding your child. Every 3 hours from the time they start their feeding and each feeding usually lasts longer than an hour because the infant falls asleep during the meal.

9. If you're going to do birth announcements, get most of it ready before you give birth: the template, the labels, and the envelopes.

10. New mothers space out and can't remember things due to the lack of sleep.

11. When you do laundry for the baby, do not use fabric softer which can irritate their skin.

12. Diaper Genies are hazardous to the environment. Diapers are difficult to decompose but when you have the plastic in the Diaper Genie wrapped tightly around them, diapers are never likely to decompose ever.

On Coming Home 2

I want to remodel my parents' house desperately! It's stuck in the 1940s decor. The wall paper is horrendous; gold jacquard prints, and thin red and white plaid. We have two rooms that have dark wood paneling on the walls. The kitchen laminate tile is a dark orangish red. The kitchen counter has floral contact paper on top of dark yellow laminate tops and the dark wook cabinets have these old handles smack in the middle of them. Oh and the bathroom has these pink and black tiles and a nonfunctioning six showerhead shower.

I wonder if I could just fix up one little thing while I'm here....

Well, I'm busy helping my sister with her newborn baby. She is so tiny and very gentle. I'm basically making sure to feed my sister so she could feed her baby and cleaning around the house.
On Coming Home

The time on my flight to Chicago went by smoothly and quickly. I read, ate my BK Big Fish sandwich with cranberry juice, knitted, listened to my MP3, journaled, and it was time for the landing. However, once I landed in Chicago, it was a different story. Everything just went wrong. First of all they gave us the wrong baggage claim number so I was waiting at the wrong area for 15 minutes before I realized that no baggage was going to come out of baggage claim #7. Luckily our bags were just one baggage claim number over. (Note to self: Never buy black luggage again. Hot pink is preferable.)

Once I finally located my luggage, I stepped out into the refreshingly cool Chicago air and began looking around for my dad. O'Hare has three different lanes on arrival; one for car rental and hotel shuttles, one for prearranged taxi or limo services, and one for personal pick ups. Apparently my dad did not know this because he was looking for me in the wrong lane. I waited for an hour and a half by which time the air had turned cold. Of course my dad doesn't have a cell phone so I finally ended up taking the taxi home. It was really scary to watch that meter run. Whether we're moving or not, it kept increasing by 20 cents every 10 seconds. The 20 minute ride home cost me $27.

It was too late to go to my sister's house and I was badly in need of some nourishment. After a satisfying home cooked Korean meal, I had a nice chat with my mom and dad, and fell asleep.

A New Birth

My sister gave birth to her first born daughter last night!!! I was so excited I couldn't go to sleep. Tomorrow I'll be flying over to Chicago to see my sister and niece!!! I can't wait!!! I'll be posting pictures when I get back from my trip. I also get to celebrate my dad's birthday while I'm there. I hope it's not too cold.

Autumn

The weather is getting cooler and it's definitely feeling like autumn so I had to start wearing socks this week. I like being barefeet better than wearing socks. It means more laundry and dealing with the missing sock. It also means I can't grow out my toe nails because it hurts when they rub against the socks. One good thing is that I can save money on my monthly pedicures since no one can see my toes anyway. I guess I can also take this opportunity to finally give some healing to my abused feet from the summer. I don't like to lotion my feet during the summer because they become too slippery when I wear my slippers barefeet. I wonder if my feet can ever be soft.

I also pulled out my flannel pajamas.

Jean taught me how to knit two weeks ago. I chose a bright happy orange colored yarn for my first project, a scarf. I've offered to knit it for several people, but no one seems to want an orange scarf so maybe I'll be making it for myself. Progress is slow because I've had to restart it at least ten times now. I wonder if I'll be able to wear it this winter.
