Weekend Retreat
This past weekend some people from our Bible study went away to Palm Springs for a retreat. There were twelve of us plus our Bible study leader’s family. There was a good mix of ethnicity as well, Hispanic, Asian, African, and Caucasian. We had a schedule to guide us, but it was a relaxed atmosphere. The weather was perfect, sunny and warm with a slight breeze.
Graham decided to have this retreat because almost everyone at Bible study at one time or another has asked him how he got certain insights out of a Bible text. So he taught us how to study the Bible in context on our own and shared resources to aid us. Afterwards he gave us a text in John to study and we had to share what we learned in the evening. All of us felt a bit nervous about the sharing time but it turned out to be an amazing time of blessing. It was more interactive rather than a lecture. I personally found The Bible Expository of New Testament by Warren Wiersbe, Essential Christianity by Dr. Walter Martin, and The New Testament: An Expanded Translation by Kenneth Wuest very helpful.
We also had some free time to go to the pool, take naps, hangout, and take a dip in the Jacuzzi.
What I liked about the retreat besides what we learned about Bible study was learning about each other. It was easy to be open since we all knew each other and we knew that our relationships will carry on beyond the retreat weekend. The girls stayed up until 2 A.M. Friday and Saturday nights sharing about each other’s lives candidly, both painful and humorous. It really brought into reality once again that we are all broken people. Thank God for His love and grace to come as we are and not be perfect.
